WBEM
Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM)
is a set of management and Internet standard technologies
developed to simplify and standardize management of
enterprise computing environments. WBEM leverages emerging
Web technologies in order to deliver the standard. The
DMTF has developed a core set of standards that make
up WBEM, which includes

-
A data model, the Common Information Model (CIM) standard
-
An encoding specification, xmlCIM Encoding Specification
-
A transport mechanism, CIM Operations over HTTP
The CIM specification is the language
and methodology for describing management data. The
CIM schema includes models for all components and resources
in an IT infrastructure including Systems, Applications,
Networks (LAN) and Devices. The CIM schema will enable
applications from different developers on different
platforms to describe management data in a standard
format so that it can be shared among a variety of management
applications. It also allows for a standard way to extend
the schema to accommodate vendor specific extensions.
The xmlCIM Encoding Specification defines XML elements,
written in Document Type Definition (DTD), which can
be used to represent CIM classes and instances.
The CIM Operations over HTTP specification defines a
mapping of CIM operations onto HTTP that allows implementations
of CIM to interoperate in an open, standardized manner
and completes the technologies that support WBEM.
For details on the standard refer to www.dmtf.org.
WMI
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
is Microsoft's version of WMI. It is an infrastructure
to support the CIM model and Microsoft-specific extensions
of CIM. It offers a powerful set of services, including
query-based information retrieval and event notification.
Data is input into the CIM-based repository via Providers
(conceptually similar to SNMP Agents). Data is accessed
via a COM/DCOM API:
The WMI infrastructure ships in Windows 98, Microsoft
Windows NT® 4.0 SP4, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
It also is supported on Windows 95. It runs as the "Windows
Management" Service.
The main difference between the WBEM standard and that
of WMI is the transport mechanism. WBEM uses XMLcim
over HTTP and WMI uses COM/DCOM.
